More than Memorization

With a degree in biochemistry from Beloit, you will learn to understand—not memorize—the basis for the biological revolution occurring in our world. Stem cells, cloning, telomeres, aging, gene therapy—these are the issues facing biochemists and molecular biologists today.

Our hands-on, inquiry-based curriculum ask students to develop their own understanding and to communicate it to others to create a deeper knowledge of the chemical basis for biological processes.

Learning and Doing

Our goal is for students to do what biochemists actually do. Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary field housed within the chemistry and biology departments at Beloit College. Students use sophisticated techniques and instruments in both departments to develop a molecular understanding of biomolecules and biomolecular processes.

Biochemistry students develop necessary skills for employment and further education and training in pharmacy, medicine, biology, chemistry, and biochemistry. Biochemists are key members of interdisciplinary teams in medicine, environmental research, and biotechnology.

Many of our biochemistry majors continue on for an advanced degree, not only the M.D. or Ph.D., but for M.B.A. and law degrees as well. Our graduates become doctors and researchers in academia, government, and industry, and they also go on to become lawyers, investment bankers, political advisors, and business executives.

A biochemistry major from Chicago with a special interest in dermatology and plastic surgery, Allie spent two weeks shadowing Italian doctors. These are her recollections from her time there.
